Many Murders in the Month of Martyrs



The incidents of murders marked a sharp rise in the capital last month compared to January, showing a slide in the law and order situation.

At least 23 people, including businessmen and journalists, were assassinated in February while 17 in January, police and hospital sources said.

Still, law enforcers claimed the situation is under their control.

Media reports reveal that murders, muggings and snatching were committed in the areas under 41 police stations in the metropolis almost every day, with many crimes going unreported, some people said.

The most-talked-about murders of the month were journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi.

On February 11, Sagar Sarwar, news editor of Maasranga TV, and his wife Meherun Runi, a senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were brutally killed by unidentified miscreants in their rented flat at West Rajabazar.

On Tuesday, a BNP leader was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in Bhasantek area. Police arrested two people in this connection.

On Sunday, Police recovered an unidentified body from Motijheel area while a driver of a tobacco company was killed at Khilgaon the day before.

On February 24, unidentified miscreants stabbed an RMG worker to death in Mirpur. Police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the killing.

On February 23, a seven-year-old boy, was found dead in a cropland in Keraniganj, on the outskirts of the capital, on Thursday, two days after he was abducted for ransom.

On February 22, unidentified assailants hacked to death employee of a touring agency in Naya Paltan area.

On February 18, a teenage boy was found dead in the waste depot at Jatrabari after one month of his missing.

On February 17, police recovered the body of Abdur Rahman, a businessman, from Mohammadpur area.

On February 15, a domestic help was raped and later killed at Sabujbagh. Police recovered the body from the top floor of a six-storey building of her employer.

However, police managed to arrest the killer of the domestic aid from Ashulia where law enforcers recovered the body of an unidentified young girl from the Turag River.

A college girl was found dead at her sister’s house in Darussalam area. Police detained the victim’s brother-in-law for interrogation.

On February 13, criminals killed an employee of a jeweller’s and looted 37 tolas of gold-made ornaments from Dakkhin Khan.

On February 10, police unearthed the partially decomposed body of a youth from Hatirjheel canal behind BGMEA Bhaban.

A housewife died mysteriously at Mohammadpur the same day and an official of a brokerage firm, Masud Parvez, was killed under the wheels of a train in Khilkhet area. Relatives suspect that he was murdered.

On February 9, a housewife died mysteriously at Gandaria. Husband of the victim is on the run after the incident while a minor boy was allegedly killed by his stepfather in Demra area the same day.

Even, a housewife and a tea stall owner were killed in Kamrangirchar area the same day. Members of both the families claimed they were killed, but police lodged unnatural death cases.

On February 6, police recovered the body of a child from an underground water tank of a house at Kafrul. The victim went missing since January 27.

On February 3, the law enforcers recovered the body of an advertising firm owner from a residential hotel at Segunbagicha.

As police could not ascertain the reason behind the killing, the case was shifted to DB police.

On February 1, a youth was killed in mob beating at Kutubkhali Boubazar near his residence at Jatrabari.

Masudur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said there is no need to worry right now as the situation is under control.

“It is not possible to bring down crimes to zero percent, but we are trying our best to take control of the law and order situation,” he added.

A number of teams of the law enforcement agencies, including plain-clothes detectives, are always on patrol to round up those involved in criminal activities.
