Police Corruption



A section of policemen have long been involved in various crime including drug trade, abduction, extortion, blackmailing and bribery while their duty is to prevent crime.

Police personnel were suspended or closed temporary after any one sued or made complaint against them but after few days or months the policeman was come-back to his post.

There are very few instances of awarding exemplary punishment to the policemen involved in criminal activities.

It was alleged that very few policemen got punishment comparing to the number of crime they do while most of the time police personnel are out of reach from the allegation for their power except sometime they caught in red handed.

Most of the time the cases against police was filed with Magistrate Court as the police stations concerned declined to register them and even they did not take any steps to probe the allegations.

A top police official seeking anonymity said that police personnel investigate the complaint against police so that the corruption in police is continuing.

While various police official said that for a few number of dishonest police personnel the entire force has to bear the burden of blame and liability.

In recent, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested three policemen of Detective Branch of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police with 954 bottles of Phensidyl at Bheripara in Rajshahi distruct On March 3.

On February 6, Seven people, including three police personnel of the Kafrul police station and a former army person, have been arrested allegedly their involvement in demanding extortion of holding a businessman in the city.

On August 22, 2011, eight police personnel including an assistant commissioner were arrested in Rajshahi on extortion charge.

A fraudulent and embezzlement case was filed against two policemen including Sutrapur office-in-charge Md Nazrul Islam, On June 27, 2011.

On May 30, a housewife filed a case with Dhaka court against six people including officer-in-charge of Motijheel Police Station and two of his colleagues for issuing threat to kill her husband in crossfire.

On May 25, 2011, a Dhaka court issued warrant for arrest of two policemen of Mirpur Police Station on charge of extorting Tk 10,000 and snatching a mobile phone from a resident of Mirpur on March 20.

On April 5, 2011, a case was filed against officer-in-charge (OC) of Rampura Police Station along with its two sub-inspectors (SI) with a Dhaka court on charge of extortion.

A case was filed against the two policemen with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka On March 27 last year.

In last six years around 90,000 complaints submitted by various people to police headquarter, sources said.

Police headquarter sources said over 57,000 policemen faced departmental action for neglect of duty and involvement in criminal activities in the last few years.

In 2011, around 10,000 policemen faced punishment in field level in whole country.

Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, Inspector General of Police told daily sun, “Our police department have many talented people and most of the people in our police department are good while a little number of people is involved in this kind of unethical activities.”

“But we have very tough law to punish corrupt police personnel in our police department. We are in Zero tolerance in this matter.” He added.

While asked him that police personnel are temporarily suspended or closed after any allegation or case but after few months later they returned to their work, he denied that allegation and told that this is totally wrong.

He said in police department there is rule to give award for good work. On the other hand there is rule to give punishment for bad work.

Mohammad Hadis Uddin, Former IGP told Daily Sun, “I think police duty is to protect people from various crime but policemen are involved in various crime which is quit unaccepted, unethical and illegal.”

He also said, “Police department should take stern action against the alleged police officials. Exemplary punishment should be ensured for such indulgence in crimes.”

Some police personnel are responsible for these sorts of incidents, not the whole police department, he added.
